We are always glad to welcome new members, from undergraduate students to professors. Please sign up to our mailing list (https://lists.cam.ac.uk/sympa/info/ucam-comhaz) to stay in touch.
We welcome undergraduate researchers to our group on a variety of projects. Most projects are run by Cambridge undergraduate students (if you are considering applying to study with us, do!), but we do advertise occasional internship vacancies open to external applicants.
We accept students joining us through the Department of Geography's MPhil in Geography programme. There are also several excellent MPhils in Geography (Polar Studies at SPRI, Anthropocene, Holocene) and Earth Sciences (Quantitative Climate and Environmental Science) which allow you to do some form of research.
We welcome PhD researchers every year, with deadlines typically in early December (if seeking funding from Cambridge) or mid-spring (if applying for external funding). Check out the pages for Geography (https://www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/directory/eaggpdgeo) and Earth Sciences (https://www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/directory/eaespdpea). The most common funding routes are through the UK government PhD positions and internal Cambridge funding (https://www.student-funding.cam.ac.uk/). I am a designated supervisor for the new CREATES doctoral landscape award (https://nercdtp.esc.cam.ac.uk/staff/maximillian-van-wyk-de-vries), and you can apply to work with me through this scheme. Both accept international applicants (bear in mind that competition is high). In general, all CoMHaz PhD students will benefit from a dual-departmental affiliation across both Geography and Earth Sciences, with all the extra support and opportunities which come with this.
When we have specific project-related postdoctoral opportunities we will advertise them here, on social media, and on the university website.
There are other sources of postdoctoral funding you may apply for. We welcome enquiries from prospective postdoctoral fellows whose interests overlap with our own. We can help you to prepare funding applications; please get in contact as early as possible before the deadline. In general, all CoMHaz post-doctoral researchers will benefit from a dual-departmental affiliation across both Geography and Earth Sciences, with all the extra support and opportunities which come with this.
Examples of sources you might apply for include:
Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships
Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowships
Newton International Fellowships (non-UK)
NERC Independent Research Fellowships
Junior Research Fellowships (Cambridge Colleges)
There are many country or nationality-specific opportunities, including the Commonwealth, Switzerland and Poland.
If your research relates to a specific grant call we may also be able to write people in as senior project-specific postdocs ('Research Co-lead').
We have an active visiting researcher scheme for visitors from a PhD to professor level to work with us in Cambridge. Please get in touch for more information.
